Pittsburgh Business Times: “Data reveals economic impact of immigrants in Pittsburgh metro area”

Immigrants make up 3.4 percent of the Pittsburgh metro’s population, but their ranks include 4,409 entrepreneurs and they make up 6.9 percent of the local education services industry and 6.3 percent of the professional, scientific and technical services sector here.

That’s part of the data released on Tuesday by political, faith and academic leaders on the economic impact of immigrants spanning workforce participation, tax contributions and spending clout.

It was part of an event in Braddock that marked the national launch of Map the Impact, a campaign spearheaded by New American Economy to highlight the influence and impact of immigrants in 50 metros and 435 Congressional Districts.

NAE, a bipartisan effort for immigration reform, includes among its co-chairs Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York; Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp. and 21st Century Fox; and Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of Walt Disney Co.

Tuesday had been declared a day of action nationally by NAE as local leaders announced a shared commitment to building the region through inclusion and welcoming.
