Political rhetoric and restrictive laws aimed at undocumented immigrants have made this army of manual laborers and nannies the villains of the 21st century. This is the premise of a new book that outlines how such factors, in the end, hurt the American economy.
Journalist Pilar Marrero’s “Killing the American Dream,” published by Palgrave MacMillan, outlines how the loud and often angry anti-immigrant language, together with new regulations aimed at illegal immigration across the country, have given rise to hate groups and fueled incidents of violence against immigrants.
When that happens, the ingenuity, entrepreneurship and hard low-income work the economy needs to grow is also hampered, she writes. Marrero has been a journalist for 25 years and is an editor at La Opinion, the largest Spanish-language daily newspaper in the United States.
