Statements from NAE Executive Director Jeremy Robbins on Additional Biden-Harris Immigration Executive Orders
Date: February 2, 2021
Restoring America’s Humanitarian Commitments
“NAE applauds the Biden administration’s decision to work towards addressing the root causes of migration and creating a fair and humane asylum system,” said Jeremy Robbins, Executive Director of New American Economy. “The Trump administration’s attacks on asylum not only undermined our humanitarian values, they also created chaos at the border and more than doubled the immigration court backlog. We need a safe, fair, efficient asylum system that honors our responsibilities and keeps America safe.”
Improving Legal Immigration Pathways
“Immigration has been one of America’s greatest competitive advantages in the global economy, and we applaud the Biden administration’s focus on repairing the harm done to our immigration system under President Trump,” said Jeremy Robbins, Executive Director of New American Economy. “Legal immigration to the U.S. strengthens our communities and helps grow our economy, and it will be an important part of our recovery out of the COVID-19 pandemic and recession.”
Reuniting Separated Families
“Separating thousands of children from their families is one of the gravest, most damaging actions taken by the Trump administration, and families and communities across the country will be living with the consequences for years to come,” said Jeremy Robbins, Executive Director of New American Economy. “We are pleased to see that the Biden-Harris administration recognizes and plans to meaningfully address these harms.”
Re-Establishing a Task Force on New Americans
“Our immigration process does not end the moment immigrants arrive in the U.S., and it is essential that the federal government work directly with local communities to help newcomers become more fully American,” said Jeremy Robbins, Executive Director of New American Economy. “We celebrate the Biden-Harris administration’s decision to re-establish a federal Task Force on New Americans, and we look forward to working with federal agency and community partners to advance immigrant integration and inclusion.”
Reviewing the Public Charge Rule
“Throughout our history, immigrants have come to America’s shores with very little, in search of a better life for themselves and their families — and they have found success,” said Jeremy Robbins, Executive Director of New American Economy. “Time and again, that success has generated economic growth and cultural diversity for entire communities. Turning people away because they might, at some point on their journey, need a helping hand is un-American, and President Biden is right to begin the process to review and reverse the Trump administration’s damaging public charge rule.”
