Good4Utah: “Bipartisan group calls for sensible immigration reform”
Date: February 21, 2017
Local business and community leaders stood united at the Capitol to weigh in on the heated debate over immigration.
They come from different walks of life and different sides of the political spectrum, but today they stand shoulder to shoulder with a common cause.
“I don’t want to criticize absolutely no one concerning this issue, but I just want to beg for everybody to see it from a more humanitarian side,” said Jorge Fierro.
Fierro immigrated to America when he was 22 years old. He now owns Rico Brands, a food manufacturer employing about 85 people.
He and other local leaders are part of a group known as New American Economy.
Together they are taking a stand on the national rhetoric on immigration.
“President Donald Trump in the recent campaign talked about building a wall, you may have heard of it, but he also talked about a big beautiful door in that wall,” said State Representative Mike Winder, (R) West Valley City.
This group wants congress to open that door and enact sensible immigration reform.
“Immigration has always been a part of our history, but at this point we need to focus on fixing the problems and on allowing a better path,” said Salt Lake City Councilman Charlie Luke.
