KTUL Tulsa: Tulsa to identify workforce opportunities, promote integration for immigrants
Date: September 20, 2017
Mayor G.T. Bynum announced Wednesday that the City of Tulsa will be taking on a new initiative to better identify workforce opportunities for immigrants.
Tulsa has been named one of 25 “Gateway for Growth” cities by the New American Economy, according to a press release. The city will receive a $15,000 grant and “technical assistance in collecting data to better understand the social and economic impact of the local immigrant and refugee population.”
The data will be used to benefit native-born and immigrant residents of Tulsa, the city says.
“Tulsa’s greatest assets are its people, and immigrants are valuable members of our community that contribute to our city’s overall success,” Bynum said. “Improving our citywide outcomes of educational attainment, economic growth, and a high quality of life requires that all Tulsans have clear pathways to prosperity. The NAE grant provides Tulsa with the data we need to make informed decisions relative to our immigrant and refugee community.”
Bynum also announced the launch of the New Tulsans Initiative. The city will partner with community groups “to develop a strategic plan focused on promoting socially responsible immigrant integration.”
