Silicon Valley Business Journal: More than a third of Silicon Valley’s population is foreign-born

More than one out of three people in Silicon Valley are foreign-born, a group that collectively pays around $11.4 billion in state and federal taxes each year, according to a new compilation of immigration data from the Partnership for a New American Economy.

The group, which is spearheaded by former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch, is pushing for immigration reform nationwide. Locally, the group’s efforts are supported by the city of San Jose and the Silicon Valley Organization, both of which held a joint panel discussion Monday evening to discuss the data.

“It’s often repeated that immigrants are a vital part of Silicon Valley’s economy, but when backed up by these important impact statistics it becomes far more than a talking point,” Derrick Seaver, executive vice president of The Silicon Valley Organization, said in a statement. “First generation Americans and their families power the Silicon Valley innovation economy, and that economy powers the nation.”
